Recap: Duchess Portal Event

May 13, 2009

About fifteen people, including some men, were present at the IProfs
office in Utrecht for the Portal workshop. After some drinks and a plate
of mexican food we took our laptops to the presentation room. Marco
Beelen is a software architect working for IProfs and even portal exam
leader at JavaBlackBelt, so he has quite some knowledge about portals.
He first explained what portals are, what they are used for and which
portal servers are most used in real life. It appeared WebSphere
is used most, but since JBoss Portal is Open Source and a good second
choice, this portal server was used during the hands on exercises.

We have installed JBoss Portal (extract-and-go) and have created and
deployed our first portlet. We even got two portlets talking to
eachother, fun! The workshop consisted for a large part of practical
exercises which really gave us a feeling of what a portlet server does
and what a portlet really is.
It was an interesting evening and nice to see so many already familiar
faces there again!

Duchess Portal Workshop

April 10, 2009

We are proud to announce our next event – a Portal Workshop – by Marco Beelen.

Marco is one of the lead-developers on the first publicly available portal implementation in Europe of Websphere Portal, he is examleader for the portal exam at JavaBlackBelt. Currently he is employed as software-architect at IProfs.

A portal is a framework for integrating information, people and processes across organizational boundaries. It provides a secure unified access point, often in the form of a web-based user interface, and is designed to aggregate and personalize information through application-specific portlets. One hallmark of enterprise portals is the de-centralized content contribution and content management, which keeps the information always updated.

This workshop consists of a presentation and a hands-on session. So don’t forget your laptop.
