About fifteen people, including some men, were present at the IProfs
office in Utrecht for the Portal workshop. After some drinks and a plate
of mexican food we took our laptops to the presentation room. Marco
Beelen is a software architect working for IProfs and even portal exam
leader at JavaBlackBelt, so he has quite some knowledge about portals.
He first explained what portals are, what they are used for and which
portal servers are most used in real life. It appeared WebSphere
is used most, but since JBoss Portal is Open Source and a good second
choice, this portal server was used during the hands on exercises.

We have installed JBoss Portal (extract-and-go) and have created and
deployed our first portlet. We even got two portlets talking to
eachother, fun! The workshop consisted for a large part of practical
exercises which really gave us a feeling of what a portlet server does
and what a portlet really is.
It was an interesting evening and nice to see so many already familiar
faces there again!

This event has been postponed until after the summer.

We are proud to announce our next event: JBoss Seam by Lunatech tag-team duo, Peter Hilton and Nicolas Leroux.

JBoss Seam is a powerful new application framework for building next generation Web 2.0 applications by unifying and integrating technologies such as Asynchronous JavaScript and XML (AJAX), Java Server Faces (JSF), Enterprise Java Beans (EJB3), Java Portlets and Business Process Management (BPM).

Seam has been designed from the ground up to eliminate complexity at the architecture and the API level. It enables developers to assemble complex web applications with simple annotated Plain Old Java Objects (POJOs), componentized UI widgets and very little XML. The simplicity of Seam will enable easy integration with the JBoss Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) and Java Business Integration (JBI) in the future.

This presentation aims to show you the latest development methods using the JBoss Seam framework and all his “components”: Hibernate Validation, Hibernate Search, JAXB, RESTful web services, etc. Through a simple example and with the help of JBoss Seam as a “glue”, we will show how easy it is to transform the simple example into a powerful application.

Peter and Nicolas share many years of experience building Java EE applications for corporate and government IT projects using open-source libraries and agile methods, and recently started the Benelux JBoss User Group. Peter is from the South coast of England, while Nicolas comes from the somewhat warmer South coast of France.

Recap: Our presentation at JBoss User Group meeting (June 20, 2008)

On June 20th Clara and Linda gave presentation about Duchess and issues involving women in IT at the Benelux JBoss User Group Meeting in Rotterdam.
We were well received and got to practice our presentation. We feel that it is important to talk about the issues involving women in IT so that our male colleagues are also aware of them. Changes start with awareness. For those who are interested, the slides of our presentation will soon go up at Parleys.com as free space is available to all JUGs to publish their material. We’ll keep you posted.I got one very insightful comment from someone at the meeting. During the presentation, we talked about how girls are raised differently from boys and how girls inevitably love pink and want to become a princess. After the presentation, a member of the audience told me about a female colleague, a Java programmer who is feminine and loves pink. Perhaps, it is better not to fight the pink but to mention the possibility that a girl can become a princess AND a Java programmer.

Hope you see you all after the summer!

Regards,
