Mentoring Poll
4 January 2009 in announcements by Duchess
In an attempt to involve our members from other countries and to help build some global connections and closer ties between our members, we would like to introduce a global mentoring program. Mentoring is an important part of career development, so getting feedback from someone who has been there is very helpful.
Mentoring is a process through which an individual offers professional expertise and support to a less experienced colleague. A mentor serves as teacher, counselor, and advocate to a protegee. Mentoring should be a mutually beneficial relationship.
Being a mentor gives you an opportunity to develop leadership skills and make a difference in someone else’s life.
Being a protegee gives you a chance to learn the ropes of the trade and receive feedback on your performance.
Although mentoring can involve technical topics, perhaps the choice of technology to get into, it is more about career development.
Some example questions that can be discussed are:
* What kind of career opportunities are possible for a Java developer?
* What steps do you need to take to become a software architect?
* How do I minimize the fallback when I get children?
* How to deal with sexism at my office?
Please log in and fill in the mentoring poll on the sidebar.
If you questions and ideas, or would like to help with setting up our mentoring program, please send us an email.
Duchess is a global network for connecting women in Java technology. Its mission is to promote women in this sector and to provide a platform through which women can connect with each other and get involved in the greater Java community.
Hmm, it seems that “Yes, I am willing to be either a mentor or protegee.” is not a valid answer to this poll. At least that’s what it said after I selected it and hit “Vote”.
Linda,
Just tried it myself and had no problem. I also see 2 votes for this: presumably mine and yours.
The only restriction with voting is that you have to be logged in.
If anyone else has a problem please let us know.
Clara
Got the same problem – FF3
Dear all,
Finally got around to look into this.
The poll should be fixed now, but I had to delete the existing answers. Having the same poll in the sidebar caused a conflict.
I also changed the poll answers to provide a clear split between mentor and protegee.
Sorry for the inconvenience.
