Expert meeting: Re-inventing Programming

Computers were once women. It was commonly known that women were better and more accurate calculators, and so they were employed for calculations at insurance companies or at military installations.
Women were also the first programmers, at least the visible ones: they were walking over the ballustrade of the ENIAC to put all the switches in the right setting according to a schema, with which the computer was programmed.

Computers waren ooit vrouwen. Het was algemeen bekend dat vrouwen beter en nauwkeuriger konden rekenen, dus werden zij ingezet om rekenwerk te doen bij verzekeraars, of bij militaire installaties.
Vrouwen waren ook de eerste programmeurs, tenminste de zichtbare: zij liepen over de ballustrade van de ENIAC om de schakelaars volgens een schema in te stellen, waarmee de computer werd geprogrammeerd.
